建筑作为人们生活中的基础建设，其安全性一直是备受关注的话题。传统的建筑材料能达到安全稳固，却不够美观。随着新技术新材料的发展，更多的新兴材料被用在了建筑外墙及内部结构上，如建筑外墙的各种LED显示广告牌，机场、高铁站内悬挂的航班、车次信息显示屏等，这些材料的大面积使用，在为人们带来便利的同时，也造成了一定的火灾隐患。每个国家对建筑内材料的阻燃性能都有相应的法规。这些法规对建筑材料和产品的阻燃要求非常严格，确保建筑内的人员生命安全。只要在火灾中暴露的建筑材料和产品引起了人员死亡，那么法规就会增加新的内容和测试的方法来解决相应问题。英国建筑材料的要求在法规中作了规定。该法规中材料的防火等级测试采用BS 476标准。此外，新加坡、部分欧盟国家、中国香港以及中国澳门等国家和地区也认可和使用英国阻燃标准，因此BS 476系列标准成为建筑材料在国际贸易中所需要进行的重要测试标准之一。BS 476标准包含一系列的标准，其中建筑材料常用的测试有：BS 476：建筑材料和结构的防火测试BS 476：Fire tests on building materials and structuresBS 476-3：建筑材料和构件的防火测试-屋顶外露部分防火测试BS 476-3：Fire tests on building materials and structures.
