首先按污泥的来源分为以下几种：
1.生活污水厂二沉池排出的剩余活性污泥；
2.自来水厂沉淀池或浓缩池排出的物化污泥；
3.工业废水处理产生的经浓缩池排出的物化和生化混合污泥，如造纸厂、印染厂、水洗布厂、石油化工厂、有机化工厂、肉联厂及啤酒厂等等；
4.工业废水处理产生的经浓缩池排出的物理法和化学法产生的物化细粒度污泥，如电镀厂、线路板厂等等；
5.工业废水处理产生的物化沉淀中粒度污泥，如钢铁厂脱硫除尘污泥、制碱厂盐泥、铝厂赤泥、陶瓷厂污泥、彩管厂污泥、石灰中和沉淀污泥等等；
6.工业废水处理产生的物化沉淀粗粒度污泥：如洗煤厂尾泥、玻璃厂石英渣等等；
按污泥的机理性能以及处理难度又可分为以下几种：
1、亲水性、微细粒度有机污泥，可压缩性能差，脱水性能差。如上述第一种
2、中细粒度有机与无机混合污泥，可压缩性能和脱水性能一般。 如上述第二种
3、中细粒度混合污泥，含纤维体的脱水性能较好，其余可压缩性能和脱水性能一般。如上述第三种

5、中粒度疏水性无机污泥，可压缩性能和脱水性能较好。 如上述第五种
