这项传统技术之所以广为应用，有很多原因，尤其是铅酸电池经济实惠，而且具备杰出的可靠性。不过虽然杰出却并不完美。VRLA电池使用寿命有限（设计寿命一般为12年），通常关键系统使用这种电池作为备用电源，不过定期更换。故障可能、确实时有发生。在一个典型的备用电源系统中，这种电池的作用正如其名—它们始终保持完全充满电的状态等待主电源失效。而完全充满电状态则通过连续的小电流“浮”充电维持。如果浮充电流低于某设定限值，则电池内部电解产生的气体就会再化合。在这种情况下，浮充电压即使略高于单个电池标准值2.27 V，也有可能损坏电池。小幅过电压将导致电解液析出多于再化合处理量的更多气体，这些未被处理的气体会通过安全阀溢出。如果电池温度过高，即使充电电压适当，也会导致电解液损耗。
