2-METHYL-4-ISOTHIAZOLIN-3ONE(MIT) is an antimicrobial used to control slime-forming bacteria, fungi, and algae in cooling water systems, fuel storage tanks, pulp and paper mill water systems, oil extraction systems, and other industrial settings. 2-METHYL-4-ISOTHIAZOLIN-3ONE(MIT) is frequently used in personal care products such as shampoos and other hair care products, as well as certain paint formulations. And there, 2-METHYL-4-ISOTHIAZOLIN-3ONE(MIT) is often used in combination with either Chloromethylisothiazolinone (known as Kathon CG when paired with methylisothiazolinone) or Benzisothiazolinone (an added antiseptic). 2-METHYL-4-ISOTHIAZOLIN-3ONE(MIT) is also used to control the growth of mold, mildew, and sapstain on wood products.
