尽管今天铅酸蓄电池在结构设计与使用原材料方面比过去有了很大的改进，性能有了相当大的提高，许多设计和用料精良的免维护铅酸蓄电池浮充使用的理论寿命为15~20年以上，但真正能在使用中达到如此寿命的电池恐怕是少之又少。拿汽车与摩托车广泛使用的干荷电少维护起动用铅酸蓄电池来说，设计使用寿命为4~5年以上，通过调查发现，很少能达到以上水平，大部份几个月至一年就夭折了，究其原因,我们认为有以下几点：

1)充电设备的设计不够完善，使用也不方便。

2)铅酸蓄电池放电后得不到及时的补充充电，特别是过放电对电池造成致命之伤。

3)少数厂家的产品质量低劣，以次充好。

以上原因，我们认为第二、三点从技术上讲是比较容易预防和做好的，唯第一点牵涉比较难以解决的技术问题，下面着重谈谈这方面存在的问题。
